Anybody wants to see Depeche Mode live?
OK guys, here’s the deal:
I’m currently vacationing in the DC area. I bought four tickets to the Depeche Mode show (7:30 PM tonight, July 28th at the Nissan Pavillion at Stone Ridge in Bristow, VA) for me, my wife and a friend. The fourth was in case my friend wanted to bring somebody along, but he didn’t invite anybody, so I have an extra ticket. If anybody is available, I will...

Maher’s writers often come up with these genius one-liners that would be perfect for Twitter.

Number-crunching the Universe
The celebration of Apollo 11’s 40th anniversary is once again reminding me of the wonders of space exploration, and of the Universe itself. All those pictures of faraway planets and galaxies are amazing, but you see them from a whole new perspective when you try to really grasp how big they are, and how small we are in comparison. Here are some numbers (some I looked up and some I...
15 Movies
Not all of them are necessarily my favorite movies, but they all have some specific significance, like reminding me of a certain time in my life, for example.
Les Triplettes de Belleville - Love, love, love, love, love. If you haven’t seen this, please do.
Jaws - I could watch this a million times, and I almost have.
Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (AKA Zombi 2) - My favorite zombie movie...

I dreamed that he was all insulted by my post complaining about the markup of Tumblr’s pages, because he had apparently written a lot of their code for them and so felt very personally offended, and he got all mad at me and I was just embarrassed about not knowing he had done that work for Tumblr.
So there’s that…

1. I used to weigh 250 pounds.
Lie, although I did get to weigh 200 about five years ago. I did Atkins and lost some, gained them back, then did the Subway diet and lost 60 pounds in one year. I’ve mostly kept them off, not by dieting but by having changed my eating habits permanently. I’m at about 150 now.
2. I regularly did christian pantomime when I was in high school.

The Michael Bay Surprise Sex Theory
Theory: Suspense trumps surprise.
Hitchcock implied it when he gave his famous “bomb under the table” example:
There’s a bomb under the table and the audience doesn’t know it. It explodes. That’s surprise. There’s a bomb under the table and the audience knows it, but it doesn’t explode. That’s suspense.
A film that handles suspense well, building...

Ok… this one time.
I hear and read many people calling themselves atheists, and just out of some combination of curiosity and intense interest wonder how many of them are actually agnostic.
So many people confuse the two because unfortunately agnosticism is frequently folded under atheism by many of the loudest voices. But there is a very...
Worker falls into chocolate vat, dies →

Philadelphia Inquirer:
A worker died this morning after falling into a vat of melting chocolate in Camden, officials said.
Police say the man, in his late 20s or early 30s, fell into the vat about 10:30 a.m.
According to Marquese Ernest, a security guard who works at the factory’s front gate, the tank is a bulk chocolate melter, and workers stand at the top of the tank to throw in...

I was thinking about VHS movies.
Oh, I know. No one watches VHS tapes anymore. Once again, old age and mortality get together to mock me as another part of my youth gets thrown into oblivion.
Insert some wavy lines here as we are transported back to my glorious youth.

when i was with my ex dumbass, “for fun” - he held a unloaded sawed off shotgun to my head.
and that’s why i don’t like guns.
PS - the owners of said shotgun (they were twin brothers) slammed him against the wall and threatened him for doing that.

That was my Compuserve user id, around 1995. Apart from various local BBS’s, it was my first online experience. At that time I was using a crappy 2400 bps hand-me-down modem, so surfing the Web was pretty painful (Remember how long it took to download a single picture of a naked girl? Yes you do!) This is why the Compuserve walled garden was actually pretty fast and cool, a nice...
